Thank you to Maggie Latham, for inspiring me to do tonal studies. They are fun and a great help.

The first of the two, was a watercolor, using only black and yellow paint.

The second in acrylic on paper using black, yellow, and white.

  1. Joan, these are lovely! Was it my black and white value studies that spurred you on? I often find it easier to translate the landscape and edit compositions by using just one colour and value. W&N make a colour called neutral tint which is great for this.....it's not as blue as paynes grey and is a warm kind of grey.
Thanks for mentioning in your post. My full blog address is: maggielathamart.blogspot.com/

  2. Hi Maggie, yes it was indeed your black and white value studies that spurred me on. I wanted to put your full address on my blog. I will go back and make my correction. I think many artist would gain so much from your blog.

    Best Regards
