Farewell to our gentle giant Mac

Mac

Mac, babysitting

With a sad heart I write, our Mac passed during the night, on Dec. 6th.  His last day with us was wonderful,
he ate a hearty lunch and ate all his dinner.   We both sat outdoors in the warm sunshine, I sketched and he just enjoyed being in the yard.  Before we retired for the night, Mike and I noticed something strange, he just wasn't acting himself.  It wasn't anything to be alarmed about, because  he did get that way at times.

But Mike and I knew his days were numbered, his hind legs were bad, never in pain, just lost of any feeling. The vet told us, there was really nothing that could be done for him, so Mike made him homemade meals of chicken and veggies.  Mike believes food heals all ,physical problems.

When we woke up yesterday morning Mac was in a peaceful eternal slumber, in his usual spot at the foot of our bed.    He was so loved and will be missed.
So sorry to  write such a sad post, but Mac, deserved being remembered.

    1. Hi BJ, I think anyone who has experience a Shepherd knows what truly magnificent animals they are. Mike and I have been fortunate to have various breeds of dogs for the last 45yrs. Three of the have been Shepherds, the others, cocker spaniel, shitzu, mixed breed, and a yellow lab. Each and everyone of them have brought such joy and happiness to the family. They became family members and we felt the pain each time one would pass. Mac is the last of them, in 45yrs. this is the first time without a dog. He will be remembered with love. Thank you BJ.

      All the best to you,
      Joan

  2. Dearest Joan and Mike!... How sad is my heart for you both this morning to hear your sad news! My thoughts are with you both.

Some animals seem to have almost a human spirit and our love for them seems deeper than it perhaps should be. However... when people offer love... unconditionally... that energy of love is embraced and embedded in the souls of all who live with them.IT is powerful... in both directions!

I sense that of you both... which is why I feel connected... without meeting you and why... I too share your deep sadness with this loss! Mac was as fortunate as you both to find and to share such a thing. So many people live their entire lives searching for it... and sadly ... never do!

Smile again Joanie! "You" are never alone!

    Good painting!
Warmest regards and my deepest sympathy,
    Bruce

    1. Dear Bruce,

Thank you so very much, your words touched me deeply. Yes, I knew you would understand about the bond between animals and humans. They do give unconditional love. It's said when a dog or any animal knows they are in physical distress, they go out to be somewhere alone to pass. But Mac came upstairs and tried to get into bed with me, them just went to his usual spot on the floor in front of the bed.

I feel sorry for those people who never learn to give and receive that kind of love.

Yes Bruce my friend, You and Deb and Mike and me seem to be on the same life's journey of Loving, Sharing, and feeling very Blessed.

      All the best to you,
      Joanie

    1. Dear Dean,

Thank you so much, Mac was always so willing to give love and especially fond of my grand children. Usually male dogs don't have that maternal instinct, but Mac was great with my grand daughter Ginna, she was so small and he would be so gentle with her. Today Ginna is 7yrs. old and is so sad about Mac's passing. We were very fortunate to have him.

      All the best to you,
      Joan

  10. Joan,
you needn't apologize for your post.
Our animals are near and dear to us and live in a world halfway human and halfway animal. Truly, a special place. How fabulous that he passed peacefully in your presence. That's a gift.
    Hugs to you and yours...
