30 Day Challenge, The End

5x7 oil on canvas panel
Crab Meadow Beach

This is the last of the 30 day challenge,
It has been an experience and I am so happy it is over.
Now I can take my time and perhaps go back and
tweak some of the paintings started.

Today will be spent in my studio, it is snowing once again, although
they  are predicting just a coating of an inch, not so bad.
It is winter after all, oh to be young again, to be happy just to play in
the snow.   Now I have a new way of enjoying the white stuff, from
my window and yes, drawing and painting what  Mother Nature is
dishing out to us, it's always a surprise from day to day.

One of my favorite books, it's almost  like a bible to me, that I have
referred to through out the years of painting that is The Artist's Way,
by Julia Cameron.  She writes about paying attention , " The capacity for
delight is the gift of paying attention" That quote stands out in my
mind for today.
Happy Painting everyone.

Day 29

The first step just sketching in stage
Strawberries and Cream
5x7 oil on canvas panel

I started this from a set up, had to work quickly.  Dealing with
fresh fruit or flowers , one can't dilly dally.  Thank goodness
for digital cameras.  I took a photo and will finish this
when the paint dries a bit.

Happy to say one day left to this challenge. Must start
getting ready for up and coming shows.
Happy Painting everyone.

Day 28

5x7 oil on canvas panel
Old Westbury Gardens Gazebo

Really in the home stretch.  I was nominated again to do the 3/5 challenge on
face book.  I am trying to nominate other artist.  After the face book challenge
that will be THE END of face book for awhile.
I know that's been said, but just realized face book is only a way of
me procrastinating from doing what I really want to do, PAINT.

Okay, that's enough of that, the snow is still out there and
once I have my coffee, and start my day.  It will be a day
of sketching from the window.
Happy Painting Everyone.

Day 27

4x6 acrylic sketch on 140lb. hot press w/c paper

Well there is certainly a morning after, wow, we got 24 inches
and thank God, the wind wasn't bad enough to cut out

I shoveled a path so that my little Monet could go out and
do his business.  He has his favorite spot in the yard.

I am happy this 30 day challenge is coming to an end, have no
intentions of doing this again.

I do hope everyone is enjoying the winter, happy painting everyone.

Day 26, waiting for the Blizzard

5x7 watercolor on 140lb. Bockingford paper

Well here we are waiting for the  The Blizzard of 2015 headed right
for us here on Long Island.

First and foremost for all my fellow bloggers who will be in the
path of this mighty winter storm, please be safe and prepared.

Of course Mike and I, have all the necessities in the event of a power
outage.  We just went to WalMart for a fun item, a portable dvd player.
How can we live without tv.  Only joking I am sure we can think of
something.  We have the flashlights batteries and candles.

Hoping for this to be over soon, really want the warmer days to paint
outdoors.  But you know  what they say, lemons, make lemon aid.
I do have my mini paint box,  so I will go out and paint snow.
There it's all good.
Happy Painting Everyone.

Day 25

5x7 acrylic on 140lb. watercolor paper

So very close to finishing this 30day challenge.  Will I ever do this again,
probably not.  I thought this would be a great way to improve my skills
as an artist.  But not happy to say, for me, it was more about keeping
up with the challenge.  My dear friend Vic, once again made me aware,
simply by saying once this is over just go back to doing your art.
In my own time and once again make my own growth as an artist
the priority.

So many fine artist who actually do this challenge seem to go through
it without a problem and in no way an hindrance to their own artistic
creativity.  Oh well, I tip my hat to them.

I will see it through to the end, and then just simply paint without any
self imposed pressure.

Happy Painting everyone.

Day 24

4x6 watercolor
hot press paper

So glad I didn't officially commit to this challenge. Coming to an end
and it is so difficult to remain  enthusiastic .

We are having a  sloppy winter mix, snow , rain and just plain nasty.
Even Monet has cabin fever.

Oh well, tomorrow it will be better.

Happy Painting Everyone.

Today just got away from me, just did this quick watercolor sketch
of radishes, will try to get with tomorrow
Happy Painting everyone

Day 22

The Little English cottage
oil on 6x8 canvas panel

Must say keeping up with challenge is very challenging to say the
least.  Managed to do another quick of the English Cottage,
this time in oil.  Don't really like painting this tight although
there is a degree of impressionistic rendering in the back ground trees.

Hopefully I will do a little more tweaking on the cottage tomorrow.

Happy Painting everyone.

Day 20 and 21

Long Island farm
An apple a day
w/c wip

Sorry to say,  I missed yesterday.  Got a little side tracked with
my face book postings.  I did the Three a day for 5 days.  Great
Now that is over, it is so important for me to focus on my'
up and coming shows.  First, must organize my studio,
so that I can have my ducks in a row.
Supplies, canvases, papers, oils, watercolors etc.
I am so very unorganized.
Okay, enough of my sob story, time to get with it, and of course
Happy Painting Everyone.

Day 19

English Cottage in oil
5x7 on canvas panel

Wanted to post something for the 19th day of the 30/30
challenge.  I am doing the same subject on this
time it is in oil.  I will finish this tomorrow.

Happy Painting everyone.

Day 18

An English cottage
watercolor on 140lb. prepared paper

Happy to say that I am sticking with the 30 day challenge, it's a great
feeling.  This is a 5x7 watercolor on acrylic varnished 140lb.
paper, again, this process makes the surface erasable.
The white's in the paintings was just wiped out with a wet
I'm not used to working this tight, and like a more loose technique, which
I will attempt in oil.  This is a wip

Happy Painting Everyone.

Day 17

Today I worked in gouache on
140lb. watercolor paper

I had a pleasant surprise yesterday, another artist challenged  me to do
the 3 paintings a day for 5 days.  Which is an honor
and not that difficult, because you get to choose your
own paintings that have been done.

On the fourth day, I am supposed to challenge another artist
on face book.  There are so many wonderful artist it is so very
hard to pick just one.

Happy Painting Everyone.

Day 16

6x8 oil on canvas panel
Using my new Judson Pocket Paint Box
6x8 wip

So here it is day 16 of the 30 day challenge.  If I can continue then
maybe, the next 30 day challenge I will officially join.
That aside, just wanted to share this great little box.
I purchase the plate so that it can be used on a camera
tripod.  Also, the slip-in easel which allows us to work
on 6x8 or even 8x10 canvas panels.
It will be a treat to use when we go out and
paint on location.   For now the ipad and photos
from last summer will have to do, or
just go out and paint from my warm car.

Happy Painting Everyone.

The Golden Hour

The Golden Hour
5x7 oil on canvas panel
for sale

I love painting atmospheric paintings. The design is simple but it is so
challenging to capture the various shades and colors.
I will probably do a larger piece .

I am enjoying the challenge, but must not forget the up and coming shows.
So it will be necessary to have larger works on hand to enter
in the 2015 shows.

Happy Painting Everyone.

Day 14

Brightwaters   Skaters
5x7 oil

Finished my Skaters, oil on 5x7 canvas panel.
Fun to do.

Day 13

watercolor study on varnished
prepared 140 hot press paper

I would rather do studies in this 30 day challenge.  If per chance a study
turns out to be a fairly good painting then I would frame
and show.

Don't want this challenge to be anything more than a way to learn various
approaches and techniques in my work.

This particular study was done on prepared 140lb. hot press paper.  Using
acrylic gloss varnish to coat the paper making it a surface that
can be wiped away to the white of the paper.  Of course I have learned
this from David Dunlop in his video.  Landscape Through Time second

I realize that in time it will be necessary to actually do and complete
finished paintings on a larger surface. but that is for another day.

Happy Painting Everyone.

Day 12

Brightwaters Pond
skaters, just a quick sketch in oil
Painted plein air from the car
5x7 oil on canvas

Yesterday I tested my mini paint box.  Mike
Mo and me went to Brightwaters.  A lovely
hamlet of beautiful homes surrounding a pond.
The skaters and their family were there enjoying
a lovely day.  Family members gathered and watch
their sons and daughters enjoying a hockey game.

As for the box, it was perfect and I look forward to
using it through the cold days of winter.  I took
enough photos to use as references as well.

Happy Painting everyone.

Day 11

Tomato and Lettuce
4x6 oil on RayMar panel

So happy I didn't officially join the 30 day challenge.  It does take away
the anxiety of sticking with the challenge.  But I will try to continue
Painting everyday is great, especially after the holidays.  It is
so difficult to get back into the swing of things.
So no complaints.  I shall continue, but staying in and not
going out to paint, is giving me cabin fever.

Maybe it's a good idea to paint no fattening foods like veggies
and fruits.

Happy Painting everyone.

Day 10

Yellow Primrose.   A study in yellow.
6x8 oil on canvas panel

Loving this 30 day challenge, keeping me on my toes.
This was a quick study.  Wanting to keep it light and
not become to anxious about doing a perfect painting.
For me the purpose of the challenge is to grow as an
artist, simply by painting everyday.

I used my little painters box at the kitchen table, simply wonderful.
Managed not to be too messy and it was comfortable.

Happy Painting Everyone.

Day 9

5x7 acrylic sketch on paper.

My new guerrila paint box. What I love most about blogging , I
get so many great ideas and tidbits.  Julie Ford Oliver, has inspired
me, as well as so many of you fine artist that are blogging.
My new purchase, the pocket box from Guerrila, is on 6x7.  First
saw this on Julies blog.  I wanted to have a small enough
and yet sturdy box to paint on my lap in the car.
We are having such cold weather on Long Island, it is too dangerous
to go out and paint, so this little box will enable me to go
out with Mike and just do 5x7 sketches.

Happy Painting ever
Check out Julies art, she's great.

Day 8

6x8 acrylic on foam core board.

Had to get a photo from the free photos 4 artist.  Love some of the
lovely places in England.  Thanks to my good friend Vic, for
recommending this site.

I prefer to paint from my own photos, sketches or from life, but sometimes
I need something different to work from, and this scene just called to me.

Happy Painting everyone.

Day 7

Silver Dollars , acrylic on canvas
mounted on foamcore board

Today, I had a late start and changing from watercolor
should have been attacked earlier in the day.

I do better in the morning.  It was just one of those days
Tomorrow, I will try to be in my studio first thing.
Still enjoying the challenge.  Happy Painting Everyone.

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

Day 6

Day 6
Day 6
Day 6

I had to catch up, so thought it would be good to
just do these quick pen and ink / wc sketches.

Anything to keep the challenge going.  Hopefully tomorrow,
I will be able to actually do and plan a decent painting.

Unofficial 30 Day Challenge

Primrose and Lemons
Primrose on wc paper

I was unable to start the 30 day Challenge, but would
love to try it on my own.  I have 3 more paintings to do
today, so that I will be on the 7th day tomorrow.

These are quick watercolor sketches and not intented
to be perfect little works of art,

So just for fun, with out too much thought or
anxiety, I will join the others in trying to
keep up each day.  My hat is off to those artist who have
signed up for the challene.
