First Day of Winter

Winter snowfall
5x7 watersoluble oil
canvas panel

Happy first day of winter to my fellow bloggers.  Sorry I have  not posted sooner.
Since my last post good things have happened.  I was fortunate to sell 9 paintings from my
library exhibit.  It was a total and unexpected surprise that my paintings were received so well with wonderful
compliments and sales.

We never know when that will happen, all we do is our best to work and study and whatever happens
is so totally out of our control.  With each sale comes mixed emotions, our paintings comes from the
the heart.  But what makes it easier to let go is knowing that they will go into homes of the people that truly like them.

Well that being sad, Christmas is almost upon us and there is more baking and other duties that must be done prior to the big day.  I will seeing my grandchildren and sharing Christmas morning with the wee ones brings so much joy to Mike and me
I do hope all of you have wonderful plans for this holiday season.  I will try to post again on Christmas.

My art at the library

Smaller paintings in the display case
My artwork on display at the
Bayport-Bellport Library
One of my paintings at
Wet Paints Show

First and foremost, I want to thank my friend BJ, for helping me with the widget on my blog.
It has been a busy time for me, mostly painting.  But now I am showing my work at various places.
The month of December, I have over 20 larger paintings throughout the library, and smaller
pieces in the display case.

With the new year approaching it would be great to actually start showing my work in more venues.
Tomorrow, hopefully my friend and I will go out and paint.
Happy painting everyone.

A Question to fellow bloggers.

I noticed on some of your blogs you have thumbnails under your daily post.  Also like buttons, facebook, and google.  How is that done.  I have tried various layouts it still remains a mystery to me.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Went plein air painting with my friend Sue.  This isn't a building, just a shell, which was
very interesting.  I started this one plein air and then worked on it in the studio. Not really
happy with it, so I will try another angle.  Happy Painting everyone.

Went to Hoyt Farm to paint on location.  It was one of those lovely days on Long Island.  Almost spring like.  Today, not so much, more like winter.  Met my friend Sue and we painted this shed, it isn't a real shed, just a shell.  Looking forward to going out this winter.  But will have buy some heavy clothing and hand warmers.

And On The Third Day... I went back!

Sunken Meadow 6x8 oil on canvas panel
So, today was a lovely day at Sunken Meadow.  Painted with friends and the weather was perfect.  That being said, I feel it's necessary for me to confess, I Went Back To Facebook.  Sorry to say, for 3 days it felt like I didn't know what was going on sort  of feeling in the dark.  Isn't that sad?  But it is what it is, a sign of our times.  Everyone and their mother is on facebook.

One  good thing   came from not being on for 3 days, the realization that it is equally important to reach out to real friends in my world and which I did on Tuesday.  Very enjoyable painting with the artist in the library, and today painting with friends at Sunken Meadow.  So a balancing act is needed, nothing too extreme.

Happy Painting everyone.

Art with Friends on a Rainy Day

Today was one of those rainy dreary days.  I packed my watercolors and brushes and went to the Smithtown library.  Artist meet there every Tuesday .  I worked from a photo in my tablet.  A photo from Meadowcroft a little shack.  So all in all it was a fun day.

9x12 oil on canvas panel

Today was a brisk autumn day and it was lovely.  Had to be out painting and didn't need
to go far.  Sometimes if we look we will find something to paint in our own back yard.
Monet and I set out looking and there it was, fall colors in all its glory.  Of course my little friend Mo
didn't stay long, it was after all bit chilly for the little guy.
Hope all of my fellow bloggers are enjoying the lovely weather. Happy Painting everyone.

Fighting back with a brush in hand.

Early morning w/c sketch. 140lb. Saunders rough .  It's so interesting seeing how the paint reacts to different surfaces.
This is a wip and still needs some tweaking.  What I love about the paper it can take corrections. I am missing my oil paints, so maybe tomorrow I will go out and do an oil.

I am trying to get back to normal after my visit to my daughters , we have so many distractions and worries in life, don't we?  Trying to deal with my anxious thoughts through prayer and painting.  Happy painting everyone.

Painting the town

Today s a study of building in Babylon village.  While I love beaches and parks, it time to challenge myself and do more subjects that I find incredibly difficult.  It helps in taking my mind off anxious thoughts.  Happy Painting everyone.

watercolor study on 300b. w/c paper
a watercolor study
It was necessary to make an unexpected visit to my daughters house.  She is having a medical problem, that with the help  of God will turn out to be not serious. While waiting for test results, I have been keeping myself occupied with a brush in hand and doing some watercolor studies.

All I can say is thank God for the interest and desire to use my art studies to fight back fear and anxiety that life sometimes brings to us all.

On the hand it is wonderful being with the grandchildren they bring so much joy. Hope all is well with my fellow bloggers,  Happy painting everyone.

October Sky

Caleb Smith Park
Today was a wonderful day spent with my good friend Sue.  We painted at Caleb Smith Park in Smithtown.  Colors were magnificent and the lake had a mirror reflecting quality that I am still trying to achieve.  No complaints, it was great being out there.  Happy Painting everyone.

Part of my Stradaeasel 30 day challenge

So these are just a few of the plein air paintings that were done during
the challenge.  I now look forward to painting in the studio.  I think that is just as important.

A study of movement in the water

Sunken Meadow on a very windy day cloudy day

Sunken Meadow
Little House on the lane.

Short Beach

These are just a few paintings done for the  30 day Strada easel challenge.  It was very interesting . The challenge was to go out and paint plein air for the 30 days.  My first thought was, I will never make it, but have to admit that it was very exciting.

Dealing with mother nature, and not knowing what to expect, weather wise.  We had some rain, wind and also very beautiful days.  On the summer like days, it was a different challenge, dealing with the heat, yellow jackets, they seem to love oil paint, but no harm, they don't sting.
The humidity had to be the worst of all, air quality is so important especially for someone my age.
So not complaints, what happened, I actually learned about color, light and how to see a little better.  It will be a life long adventure for me personally. But it is all a labor of love.

Coming back to blogging and working in the studio is also so very important, so sorry that I have been neglectful for so long.  Hoping to change all of that, I look forward to being a part of the blogging community once again.  Happy Painting everyone.

Was happy to learn that my painting was sold while on exhibit at the Fire Island Light House Show.
It was a pleasant surprise.  Waiting for my son and his family to arrive on Sunday, so I have been busy with getting the house ready for their visit.  Cannot wait for my grand children to arrive.

Happy painting everyone.

6x8 acrylic on canvas panel
Well folks, just got a Mac computer.  I feel as though the computer is taking over my life. lol.  Don't have a clue how to navigate this device.  A simple thing like enlarging the screen, not so simple.  Lots to learn.  Gotta say, I am loving the idea that I no longer have to deal with windows 10.  Happy Painting everyone.

Sunday At The Lake

Sunday At The Lake
Sitting in my kitchen on this fine July 4th morning.  Sipping coffee and enjoying the peace and quite.  Today we will celebrate the holiday at my sons house. In a short while I will begin my day.  Must bake a cake and then some mundane chores.

There is so much to do, I learned how to make my own gesso and texture paste.  Art supplies are so expensive, especially the texture paste, I like Daler Rowney and that is sold in England.  So yes, I will give this a try, Mike and I went shopping yesterday for the ingredients.
Feeling like a duck out of water, haven't painted in the last two days.  Hope all is well with all of my fellow bloggers.  Happy painting everyone.

Primary Colors on Another Day

Still using the primary colors in acrylic.  I purchased this orchard from Trader Joe's so I have been in the studio all week experimenting with the primary colors and using acrylic paint and gloss medium.   This one is still a work in progress, it is my second day working and it is a struggle.  Working in acrylic with just the gloss medium is a very uncomfortable way for me to use acrylic.  I've always used either a water misting bottle or acrylic flow medium.  This technique is all about glazing and layering.  It's a longer process.  I usually like fast alla prima type of painting.  I will stay with this, and keep you posted.  Happy painting everyone.

Primary Colors 3

a better photo
After working on this one, I notice that the changes that were made flattened the background.  So I will let it sit for awhile and then see what can be done to bring it back to what was intended originally.

Primary Colors #3

Primary Colors #3
Still working on the 18x24 acrylic.  Still have so much work to do on this one.  The colors in the photo are a bit off,  It's a bit warmer in real life.  Happy Painting everyone.

Primary colors

18x24 acrylic
Day #1 wip
Still working only in primary colors.  Also using gloss medium instead of water or flow medium.  It's a matter of building up glazes.  So the jury is still out, on whether or not I will continue using this technique.   I am very interested in learning more about it and will keep you all posted.
Happy Painting everyone.

Tuesday, June 21, 2016

I painted this 10x12 using acrylics, on mdf board.  This time using only the primary colors.  It's a great way to learn about color and all that can be achieved with only the three colors.  It is 5:50 am and just sitting here thinking what to paint today. Happy painting everyone. I should add, this is just day 1 of this study. It is a wip, and the painting looks darker in this photo.  It is a lot softer in tones. Oh well, I will try to take a better photo.

Purple, Yellow and Green
10x12 acrylic on mdf
This is day 2 of the my study of reflections, using purples , blue and yellows.  A limited palette but the colors are brilliant.  I want to learn different approaches and techniques when painting the usual scenes of Long Island.  A feel like a bull in a china shop,  Hopefully  will master this technique.  Happy Painting everyone.

My Rose Garden

This is a totally different approach for me, in fact a new technique.  I am working in acrylics on mdf board.   This time using a gloss medium and glazing and rather than a wet into wet.  While I find it very exciting it is also very challenging for me.  Sort like riding a run away horse.  lol.  But loving the thrill of a new adventure.  Happy Painting everyone.

Spring Arrangement

Yesterday I attempted to finish my Spring Arrangement of Roses, peony buds in a blue vase.  In my desire to paint the container, forgot about how short lived flowers are, and wait for no man lol.  Also in my haste , didn't take a digital of the set up.  So long story short had to leave it alone until there are more blooms in my garden.

Even though the painting isn't completed, I do like to see it in a frame, just to know what is needed. I haven't been painting outdoors lately and trying to do more studies in my studio.  Had problems with my computer.  Couldn't handle Windows 10, had to have a computer technician to bring it back to Windows 7.  Still having problems with my photos and now my iPad is beginning to give me some problems.  May have too much and not enough space, it's only 16gb's.  With iPad 2 there is no way to increase storage space, so it is necessary to elimate some of the e-mails and photos.

We are visiting my daughter and grandchildren soon, so I will have to rely on my iPad to post. So maybe it is good time to eliminate some of the stuff.  Hope all of my fellow bloggers are doing well. Happy Painting.

Peony and Lemons

Today I had to paint the peony flowers that are in bloom.  Also lemons thought that would make a nice summer time feel to the painting.  Still have some tweaking, this was just a 2hr. oil sketch.  After doing beach scenes had to do something different.  Happy painting everyone.

In Memory of All who have given their lives for our country.

Stroll by the bay
Had many problems with this one.  Hate to be the poor carpenter complaining about her tools. But, using a different panel and turps and  titanium white by a manufacturer that I don't normally use, the paint was too thin.  Oh well lesson leaned. My father-in-law use to say the "cheapest is the dearest in the long run".  Thanking and remembering all that have given their lives for our country, God Bless them all and their families.

11x14 oil
Yesterday, I painted in the studio.  It was a good day, Mike was out enjoying his day with a visit to his cousins house.  Mo was being a very good pup and I had the pleasure of painting without distractions.  I wanted to study a new approach, even though the scene is basically my usual type of scene.

Sometimes what seems so simple can be very difficult for me.  Yesterday it was a good study day for me and trying something new was a delight.  So, just wanted to share and say happy painting everyone.
